Welcome to DementiaVille! A Place a Dementia Patient can Go ...Where Most Won't Remember Your Name...

As the theme song from "Cheers" goes.... "You want to go where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came. You wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the
same..You wanna be where everybody knows your name".   I thought of this song when I was reading about Dementia Villages, it pretty much applies to this concept, except, most will not remember your name.  There is a village outside of Amsterdam, sometimes referred as "DementiaVille", that is so intriguing.   At first glance, it looks like an ordinary town complete with restaurants, a post office, shops and even a movie theater.  "The Villagers" are made up of men and women who have been diagnosed with Dementia.  There are 24 hour caregivers, nurses and doctors on site to assist the residents and the neat thing is, they dress in street clothes rather than in traditional scrubs.    The village is secure so that the residents are safe and will not wander.  The best part of this concept is that the residents enjoy memories from years gone by.  For example, caregivers work to bring back memories through music, food and the décor.  Living rooms resemble a living room from the 1950's, complete with a black and white T.V.   Let's hope more of these Villages pop up especially here in the United States.
